"Feeding" Your Relator

For me, it was Relator that suffered the most during the pandemic's lockdown phase. My Relator gets "fed" by lingering over a meal (often brunch - I love brunch) with a good friend or two. And eating together over Zoom just ain't the same.

If Relator is high on your list, it's important to know how to feed it. That's true for all the Strengths, of course, but I think Relator is one of those Strengths that REALLY feels it when it's not being fed. Let me give you an example.

Years ago I was working with someone who had Relator in her top 5. She said she had been feeling depressed at work and wasn't sure why. As we talked through it, she discovered that a recent reorg resulted in the layoffs of all of her close friends at work. She no longer had work relationships she felt were mutually rewarding - and having mutually rewarding, long-term relationships is fuel for Relator. That applies to BOTH work and home life.

Now if she had also had Woo in her top 5, Woo would have said something along the lines of, "OK, this is a great opportunity to go meet more people! YES!" But that's just not how Relator is wired. (FYI that it's pretty rare to have both Relator and Woo, but I've seen it a time or two).

So, I'll say it again: if you have Relator, spend some time discovering exactly what feeds it. Because when Relator is fed, you'll get a boost of energy that lasts for a surprisingly long time.

Gotta run. My Relator has a lunch date with another Relator it hasn't seen in quite a while. ;)
